RED camera setup considerations for Steadicam and commercial work
18 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The RED camera's 720p output comes through BNC connectors and requires a downconverter if using non-HD monitors or transmitters.
- A downconverter is necessary unless you have an HD monitor available, as the built-in RED monitor has limited off-axis viewing angles.
- Using the RED's built-in monitor without a downconverter is possible but problematic due to its narrow viewing angle, short cable length, and poor image quality, which can affect operating performance.
- The onboard RED monitor has one of the worst off-axis viewing angles seen on LCD panels and is not particularly bright.
- Proper Steadicam configuration uses 19mm steel rods with an ARRI baseplate, ARRI mattebox, downconverter, and external power via Terry West cable rather than onboard batteries and drives.
- Powering the RED through sled-mounted battery systems with a Terry West cable and using CF cards instead of a hard drive eliminates weight and improves balance compared to onboard power solutions.
- The RED's V-mount battery plates were machined improperly on many units and require aftermarket replacement to ensure reliable power delivery.
- The RED camera requires more auxiliary power outputs than available, making external power distribution boxes and multiple P-tap adapters essential for powering multiple accessories.
- The 720p proxy image quality from the RED is poor, producing one of the worst viewfinder images seen on digital cameras.
- Multiple RED cameras were needed on set to maintain shooting throughout the day due to frequent software failures.
Depends on
- Experiences reported are from 2008-2009 commercials and short films, technology may have evolved.
- The RED's suitability depends on specific lens choices and accessory configuration, with Element Technica bracketry strongly recommended by experienced operators.
- Battery power reliability issues documented on this particular model generation.
- Poor proxy image quality suggests possible monitor or viewfinder-specific issues rather than camera limitation.
- Software failure frequency was high during this period but may not reflect later versions.
- Image latitude concerns noted by one experienced DP may be model-specific or workflow-dependent.
