Stand load rating requirements for Pilot arm with camera payload
What the thread found
- A stand supporting a Pilot arm with 10 pounds of camera payload should be rated for at least 20 pounds, accounting for the combined weight of camera, sled, battery, balance weights, cables, docking bracket, and arm totaling approximately 20-25 pounds
- Metal stands with solid 5/8 inch pins are preferable, as cheaper stands with pins set only by a thread underneath can fail under heavier loads
- When calculating stand stability, the positioning of the load relative to the stand's base matters significantly—weight at 4 feet from a stand base requires different stability considerations than the same weight at 8 feet due to moment arm mechanics
- Stands must maintain stability when the rig is balanced on the docking pin, which positions the load farther from the stand base and creates the greatest tipping risk
Depends on
- Exact component weights were not individually measured in the discussion, only estimated
- The stability calculations discussed apply specifically to Pilot arm setups and may differ for heavier rigs
- One participant's experience with C-stands tipping was specific to their use with a Zephyr arm
