Challenges of maintaining focus while operating a Steadicam gimbal with DSLRs at wide apertures for live event filming
16 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- Shallow depth of field on full-frame DSLRs makes it extremely difficult to maintain sharp focus during simultaneous gimbal operation and subject movement without a dedicated focus puller
- Closing aperture to F8 or F11 helps achieve acceptable focus consistency during Steadicam work with DSLRs but sacrifices the shallow depth-of-field aesthetic
- Operating a remote follow focus system requires the gimbal operator and focus puller to maintain precise synchronization that is nearly impossible to achieve consistently during unpredictable live events
- The 5D Mark II outputs only standard definition video during recording, preventing accurate focus monitoring on high-definition external displays mounted on the gimbal
- Professional cinematographers typically restrict DSLR use on Steadicam to controlled detail shots rather than live action at events
- Conventional video cameras offer better autofocus performance and greater depth of field consistency than DSLRs for gimbal-based event coverage
- At least one operator successfully uses lightweight follow focus systems on Steadicam rigs for real-time focus adjustment
Depends on
- Discussion focuses on Canon 5D Mark II which may have different capabilities than newer models
- Some claims about focus pulling difficulty are opinions rather than objectively tested comparisons
- The mention of touchscreen focus as a potential future solution remains untested for Steadicam application
- One participant reports beta testing a small follow focus system but provides no detailed results or performance data
