Replacing an EFP Steadicam center post with carbon fiber and managing connector cables
20 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The original EFP post is secured to the base with cross-drilled holes and pins that must be drilled out for removal, or alternatively it may be glued in place requiring adhesive dissolution or cutting
- Multiple electrical connectors attach to the post including power, video, and follow focus wires with either push-pull or screw-together disconnects that must be carefully separated before post removal
- Titanium EFP posts are susceptible to being crushed or grooved by monitor arm clamps, making carbon fiber a suitable alternative material
- Post removal requires disconnecting all cables first and then accessing the base attachment points, which is achievable for users willing to carefully work with the internal electronics area
- Carbon fiber posts can be fitted to EFP bases provided they are sized appropriately to match the original diameter, as the case is designed around specific post dimensions
- Some EFP upgrades use 1.5 inch inner posts that may be compatible with EFP or 3A gimbal setups
- PRO rig posts use an 8 pin lemo connector
Depends on
- The post removal and replacement procedure varies depending on whether the post was pinned or glued during assembly
- Case compatibility depends on finding a carbon fiber post with the same diameter as the original
- Monitor arm spacers can be added as an alternative solution to prevent post crushing without replacing the post
- Some users have attempted modular post designs but specific connector specifications beyond the 8 pin lemo for PRO rigs are not fully documented in this discussion
