Selecting a high-brightness HD monitor to replace the standard monitor on a Flyer LE stabilizer
13 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The Marshall Electronics V-LCD70XHB-3GSDI and V-LCD70MD-3G are suitable monitors for the Flyer LE, offering good value under $2000.
- Marshall transflective monitors provide acceptable daylight visibility relative to their cost.
- The Flyer LE monitor cable can be modified by replacing the mini-DIN connector with BNC and XLR connectors to accommodate aftermarket monitors.
- Modifying the Flyer LE monitor cable for an external HD-SDI monitor enables full HD-SDI capability without additional equipment modifications.
- An 800 nits brightness rating with 1000:1 contrast ratio may be insufficient for viewing in very bright sunlight in some conditions, even with a monitor hood.
- The V-LCD70MD offers waveform monitoring and other advantages over the older V-LCD70XHB at comparable or lower cost.
Depends on
- The sunlight viewability assessment is based on limited user reports and varies by location and shooting conditions.
- The cable modification procedure requires technical skill; detailed instructions were offered but not included in this thread.
- The discussion dates from 2013, and monitor technology and availability may have changed.
- One user's inability to see the 800 nits monitor in some daylight situations may be specific to their environment or shooting angle.
