Building a Steadicam rig with a Zephyr HD for RED and DSLR cameras

12 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

DisputedParticipants disagreed and reached no conclusion. Read the findings as positions, not as an answer.

What the thread found

  • The Steadicam Zephyr HD is suitable for flying cameras under 24 pounds including most broadcast HD configurations, Epic, C100, C300, Sony F3, and F5.
  • Anton Bauer Dionic HC lithium batteries are recommended over HyTron 50 batteries for better power reserve, especially with power-hungry cameras.
  • Used higher-capacity rigs like Archer, Clipper, Master, or PRO packages often provide better value and weight capacity than a new Zephyr at similar prices.
  • Follow focus and wireless video transmission systems are frequently provided by production or the AC on jobs, so purchasing them immediately may not be necessary for beginners.
  • An Anton Bauer dedicated charger is preferable to third-party chargers to maintain battery health.
  • For DSLR cameras with HDMI output, an HDMI to SDI converter such as one from Atomos is required for use with wireless video systems.
  • Used recelled Dionic 90 batteries provide better performance than HyTron 50s at lower cost than new HC batteries.
  • A Zephyr V configuration includes tally wiring, tally sensor and light kit, HD Marshall monitor and return monitor for live TV applications.

Depends on

  • Zephyr HD payload capacity limited to approximately 24 pounds maximum.
  • Participants disagreed on whether a new Zephyr or used larger rig better serves a beginner's needs and budget.
  • Some accessories like wireless follow focus may be considered premature purchases for someone just starting with a larger rig.
  • Battery recommendations vary based on intended camera weight and power consumption.
  • Discussion does not clarify all cable requirements for Canon DSLR integration.
