Upgrading Zephyr camera sleds with tally systems and integration with control room equipment

12 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • The tally upgrade for Zephyr sleds costs approximately one thousand dollars and includes replacement connectors, wiring updates, and all necessary components
  • The tally system uses a photoresistor input that receives the tally signal and can be taped to the camera's tally light or lens shade
  • A complete Tiffen tally upgrade includes a tally connector on the topstage, an additional power Lemo connector, rewiring of the sled harness, a photocell receptor wire, and a talent tally LED for mounting on the lens shade or prompter
  • The bottom of the upgraded sled integrates tally into the 8-pin Hirose video and power connector with a replacement cable that allows an external tally LED to be plugged in and attached to the monitor
  • Short fiber optic jumper cables can be used to simplify connection and disconnection of equipment from the back of the camera vest

Depends on

  • The upgrade availability and pricing may have changed since 2014
  • Photoresistor tally input compatibility depends on whether the camera sends a proper tally signal from the control room
  • Regional availability of upgrade services and custom cable makers varies by location
  • The discussion does not confirm whether the tally system can accept direct camera feeds without the photoresistor method
