Tiffen Zephyr gimbal clamp design update addressing mechanical failures
14 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The updated gimbal clamp features a washer with a divider that prevents the lever from spinning freely, addressing a design flaw in earlier models.
- The new clamp design includes a looser fit for the silver cylindrical nut in the blue anodized lever, reducing binding that caused excessive sideways load on the stainless steel screw.
- Original clamps could fail by either jamming the lever in an open position or by snapping the stainless steel screw, often with little warning.
- Old gimbal clamps can be identified by the ability to rotate freely so the blue lever hangs vertically when opened, while new clamps have a raised ridge on the Delrin washer preventing this rotation.
- The updated clamps should be available as a warranty replacement for all Zephyr units manufactured before the recent design change.
- When a clamp fails, the gimbal may require rebalancing as part of the service process.
Depends on
- The discussion does not specify the exact manufacturing date range affected by the original design flaw.
- It remains unclear whether replacement clamps would be shipped for self-installation or require factory installation, as this was still being decided at the time of the discussion.
- No technical specifications or engineering details are provided beyond the general description of the changes.
