Prerequisites for attending a Steadicam workshop as a beginner
13 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
Note (as of October 2026)Curt O. Schaller, the developer of Artemis and Trinity, has no longer been with ARRI since the end of 2025. To our knowledge, ARRI currently has no dedicated team and no official contact persons for its stabilizer systems. In our view, the future of this line is uncertain. If you are buying new, get written confirmation from ARRI beforehand on how long service and spare parts are guaranteed. Have used rigs checked by the manufacturer before you buy.
What the thread found
- Prior camera experience is necessary for workshop admission, but this need not be extensive professional experience.
- A workshop serves as an introductory learning experience rather than a complete training program, and graduates emerge as beginners still requiring independent practice.
- Purchasing a stabilizer rig before attending a workshop is generally not recommended, as the workshop helps clarify whether operating is a suitable career path.
- The workshop provides foundational skills and knowledge about stabilizer systems and camera operation to enable continued self-directed learning.
- Manufacturer-sponsored workshops vary in structure, with some functioning partly as sales-oriented events while others focus primarily on education.
- Non-manufacturer workshops exist as independent alternatives to brand-sponsored offerings.
Depends on
- The experience level needed for workshop acceptance appears to vary by workshop provider.
- One comment suggests manufacturer-sponsored workshops may have lower barriers to entry than specialized independent programs.
- Workshop content and pricing differ significantly between programs, with some including accommodation and meals while others do not.
