Operating a Steadicam inverted for part of a long continuous take without using a low-mode bracket

Note (as of October 2026)Curt O. Schaller, the developer of Artemis and Trinity, has no longer been with ARRI since the end of 2025. To our knowledge, ARRI currently has no dedicated team and no official contact persons for its stabilizer systems. In our view, the future of this line is uncertain. If you are buying new, get written confirmation from ARRI beforehand on how long service and spare parts are guaranteed. Have used rigs checked by the manufacturer before you buy.

What the thread found

  • Achieving neutral balance on the rig before inverting helps maintain stability during upside-down operation.
  • Operating with your hand positioned higher up the post (toward the lower electronics housing when inverted) reduces pendulum effects and improves control during inversion.
  • Designing the inverted sequence so action stays within a frameable area minimizes the difficulty of maintaining horizon and minimizing wobble.
  • Some camera systems like the Arri Artemis include rotating counterweights that assist with balance shifts between orientations.
  • Using gyros during an inverted segment helps stabilize the shot.
  • The Arri MK-V AR and Artemis Trinity systems allow camera inversion while maintaining proper orientation in the frame, though these may not be the preferred choice if regular drop time performance matters.

Depends on

  • This applies to a specific 23-minute single take with one minute of inversion, not necessarily all inverted operating scenarios.
  • The technique of operating away from the gimbal was described as helping 'a bit' rather than completely solving control issues.
  • No solutions were offered for performing this maneuver while wearing full costume and rig decoration, which added physical constraints to the shoot.
  • The thread does not confirm whether the proposed methods were tested or whether the shoot succeeded.
