Hands-on experience with stabilization rigs demonstrated at NAB 2004
22 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
Note (as of October 2026)Curt O. Schaller, the developer of Artemis and Trinity, has no longer been with ARRI since the end of 2025. To our knowledge, ARRI currently has no dedicated team and no official contact persons for its stabilizer systems. In our view, the future of this line is uncertain. If you are buying new, get written confirmation from ARRI beforehand on how long service and spare parts are guaranteed. Have used rigs checked by the manufacturer before you buy.
What the thread found
- The Glidecam Gold with Anton Bauer base required a stiff arm adjustment but performed well after the arm was serviced.
- The MK-V rig with back-mounted vest felt heavy and sluggish, though this may have been due to camera and sled weight rather than the rig design itself.
- The Glidecam V-35 prototype was delivered overnight to the show and was still undergoing design changes with no release timeframe or price announced at the time.
- The Glidecam V-35 prototype featured multiple color options and a reversible vest design similar to a hybrid of the V20 and Gold models.
- Glidecam indicated plans to discontinue the V8, V16, and V20 series in favor of the new V-35 model.
- The Satchler Artemis rig performed smoothly with lighter camera loads and included features such as a built-in wireless mount under the mounting plate.
- The new Steadicam Ultra, released the morning of the show, was heavier but maneuverable enough for smooth handheld operation despite the weight.
Depends on
- The user was a complete beginner with stabilization rigs on their first day of use.
- The Glidecam V-35 prototype had not completed development and specifications were preliminary.
- The Satchler rig was difficult to operate smoothly with heavier camera loads.
- The assessments were based on brief demonstration periods rather than extended use.
