Troubleshooting side-to-side dynamic imbalance in a gimbal-stabilized camera rig

What the thread found

  • When a rig exhibits side-to-side dipping during dynamic balance tests, misalignment of the telescoping post stages or off-center positioning of components can be the cause.
  • The center of gravity of the camera, monitor, and battery must all lie on a vertical plane that coincides with the gimbal's central axis to achieve proper dynamic balance.
  • Static balance does not guarantee dynamic balance; a rig can appear balanced when stationary but still dip to one side when spinning.
  • Removing the camera after achieving dynamic balance will reveal whether the sled is properly weighted, as an improperly balanced sled will shift when the camera is removed.
  • The monitor's vertical position relative to the battery affects the feasibility of using alternative balancing methods, since centrifugal forces act differently depending on the height at which they are applied.

Depends on

  • The discussion involves a specific gimbal model from 2013 (MK-V 1.5 inch) and may not apply equally to all gimbal designs.
  • Some proposed balancing techniques work better with certain rig configurations than others, particularly when monitor and battery centers of gravity are at different heights.
  • No resolution was reached regarding the effectiveness of the Mickey balancing method across all sled configurations.
