Cleaning and lubricating the pan bearing in a Steadicam® Ultra 2 gimbal: solvent, oil quantity, and distribution method.

What the thread found
- Soak the bearing in acetone or isopropanol for 5 to 10 minutes, swishing gently; repeat this cycle three to four times, drying between cycles; the bearing may still release particles after 15 minutes of total soak time.
- After drying, test the bearing by applying light pressure between inner and outer races and rotating slowly, listening and feeling for sticky spots or grinding.
- Apply one drop of the recommended oil to the cleaned bearing, rotate it moderately fast in both directions to distribute the lubricant evenly, then install carefully.
- In a comparative test by multiple operators, one drop of oil proved optimal across all tested lubricants; two drops degraded Tri-Flow performance, and three or more drops caused all lubricants to increase drag and resistance prematurely.
- The original Ultra 2 bearing has a metal ball cage and performs more forcefully than Tiffen or PRO gimbal bearings; newer Tiffen bearings are smaller with more balls and do not fit in older gimbal bodies.
- An operator reported that replacing an M1 bearing with an older PRO gimbal bearing significantly reduced fishtailing.
- Ultrasonic cleaning removes contaminant very thoroughly but carries disputed risk of accelerated bearing wear.
Depends on
- Optimal oil quantity may depend on bearing age and the specific lubricant formulation.
- Ultrasonic cleaning effectiveness and wear consequences remain debated among operators.
- Ceramic ball substitution for steel balls, borrowed from motorsport bearing design, has not been tested in gimbal service.
