Gimbal handle compatibility across different gimbal brands and the mechanical issues with cross-brand mounting
12 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
Note (as of October 2026)Curt O. Schaller, the developer of Artemis and Trinity, has no longer been with ARRI since the end of 2025. To our knowledge, ARRI currently has no dedicated team and no official contact persons for its stabilizer systems. In our view, the future of this line is uncertain. If you are buying new, get written confirmation from ARRI beforehand on how long service and spare parts are guaranteed. Have used rigs checked by the manufacturer before you buy.
What the thread found
- XCS and Pro gimbal handle tapers are identical and interchangeable
- Artemis and XCS gimbal handles are not reliably interchangeable due to differences in conical shaft contact surface area and fork conical hole depth
- Using an XCS gimbal handle on an Artemis gimbal can result in insufficient contact area between the conical shaft and fork, potentially causing damage to either component
- A handle feeling secure during operation does not guarantee it meets the correct mechanical specifications for safe use
- An adapter axle specifically designed for mounting XCS Ergo handles on Artemis gimbals has been developed and tested successfully over extended periods
- Direct contact with the gimbal manufacturer is recommended before attempting cross-brand handle compatibility to ensure proper fitment
Depends on
- The analysis of XCS and Artemis compatibility was based on close-up photographs rather than direct measurement of mechanical specifications
- Sachtler did not provide detailed mechanical drawings or conical shaft specifications to confirm compatibility concerns
- The adapter solution was developed by a specific manufacturer and may not apply to other brand combinations
- Only two documented cases of XCS handles on Artemis gimbals were discussed, with one experiencing bolt failure and another experiencing handle shearing
