Reducing excessive sensitivity in gimbal pan axis by adjusting sled weight distribution
17 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- A lightweight gimbal becomes more sensitive to input and requires extremely fine control touch compared to a heavier, more loaded setup which feels more stable and solid
- Increasing inertia through additional weight distributed as far as possible from the rotation axis makes the gimbal less twitchy and easier to control smoothly
- The pan axis sensitivity issue is not solved by adding mechanical friction or stiffness to the gimbal bearing, as friction degrades the gimbal's primary function of isolating motion
- Positioning weights further out on the sled, such as on extended battery packs or auxiliary equipment, improves the overall feel and controllability more effectively than weights positioned close to the post
- A lightweight camera rig can feel overly responsive and sensitive even after maximizing existing weight distribution, requiring additional ballast weight to achieve the desired heavier rig response
Depends on
- The setup discussion is specific to a lighter gimbal system with a 2-inch post and a RED camera that was considered atypical in its sensitivity
- No specific measurements or quantified improvements were provided to verify the effectiveness of the weight distribution modifications
- One participant with experience from a major trade show event suggested the rig should not have been unusually sensitive, indicating the issue may have been configuration-specific rather than universal
