Tension adjustment of gimbal latch screws on Tiffen Archer 2: absence of factory specification and field workarounds.
What the thread found
- No official torque specification exists for the two latch screws on the gimbal handle; the manufacturer's service department confirmed they do not provide this value.
- The practical rule is to tighten until the gimbal no longer slips on the post, but loose enough that the post still pulls free smoothly; any setting within this range is acceptable.
- One operator, after experiencing gimbal slip on the first day of a shoot with a Steadicam® Zephyr, abandoned use of the latch entirely and instead secured the screw behind the latch with a hex key.
- Factory quality control is inconsistent: some units arrive with poor latch adjustment, while others like a Tiffen M2 came correctly set from the factory.
Depends on
- Adjustment depends on operator preference, post diameter, and gimbal head design.
