Mounting follow focus systems and rods to a FlyerLE Steadicam with dovetail plate
15 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The FlyerLE dovetail plate is too narrow to accommodate standard 60mm centered rods without additional bracketing.
- Standard Tiffen rod blocks may not have mounting holes that align with the FlyerLE dovetail plate.
- A Zacuto Universal baseplate can serve as an alternative solution for lighter cameras, providing 15mm rods without requiring modifications to the dovetail.
- PRO rod systems can be used with weight plates if they have pre-drilled holes for rod mounting.
- The Zacuto baseplate features 1/4x20 threaded holes on the bottom, allowing it to stack between the standard plate and weighted plate.
- A custom machinist can fabricate rods to attach to the dovetail plate.
- Tiffen sells rod mounting brackets but uncertainty existed about whether they mount above or below the dovetail.
- Zacuto sells adapter pieces to convert between 3/8x16 and 1/4x20 fastener standards for the baseplate.
Depends on
- The discussion does not confirm whether Tiffen brackets mount on top or underneath the dovetail.
- Compatibility between PRO rods and specific dovetail configurations was not definitively established.
- The solution chosen depends on camera weight and whether a weight plate is being used.
- Information about which specific Cinewidgets rods are compatible was not resolved.
