Mounting and powering an Arri Alexa camera on a Zephyr stabilizing sled
14 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The Alexa can be mounted on a Zephyr when configured as a lightweight setup, staying within the approximately 23-24 pound camera payload limit by removing unnecessary components and using minimal support hardware.
- The Alexa can be powered through the Zephyr sled using a custom 24-volt power cable connected to two V-lock batteries mounted on the sled for counterbalancing.
- Operating in 24-volt mode rather than 12-volt is preferable because it reduces current draw and extends battery lifespan, though it requires a differently wired power cable with different pinouts than 12-volt operation.
- The combination of Alexa body, lightweight lens, clip-on mattebox, 15mm rods, basic follow focus, and motor can fit within the sled weight capacity with minimal margin for additional equipment.
- High power consumption means even two batteries provide less than one hour of runtime for a fully equipped camera setup, requiring multiple spare batteries for longer shooting days.
- The connection point between the center post and camera stage uses a metal collar with five hex screws that can loosen during operation and should be checked regularly to prevent vibration and play.
- Battery performance degrades faster under sustained high current draw, making the 24-volt configuration gentler on battery health than continuous 12-volt operation.
Depends on
- Setup is only viable for lightweight configurations without teleprompters, wireless sound systems, Preston controllers, or other heavy accessories typically added in production.
- The weight limit leaves minimal headroom after mounting the camera and basic support gear, making it risky for situations where production might add unexpected equipment.
- Battery capacity of common options like Dionic HC batteries provides severely limited runtime, requiring frequent battery changes on longer shooting days.
- The Zephyr vest shows flex at upper weight limits, potentially affecting stability of heavier configurations.
- Running a separate monitor on the sled adds additional power drain to already strained battery capacity.
- The advice to lower the Alexa power warning menu setting was mentioned but full technical parameters for safe operation were not fully detailed.
