Stoesso and jitter with Steadicam® Zephyr at maximum load with ARRI Amira and cinema lenses: arm upgrade or vest replacement?
What the thread found
- The Zephyr vest can support the total weight; the root cause of jitter and jolts lies in the arm, gimbal assembly, and gimbal pin.
- Approximately 95 percent of jolts and jitter originate from the sled or camera build; pushing the arm to its limit almost certainly overloads the sled, as the arm is often stronger than the sled; upgrading the sled should be the first step.
- Overload causes mechanical damage: the arm can twist, the gimbal handle can bend, and several Zephyr operators have experienced total rig failure including damaged cameras.
- Sticking or grinding in the gimbal yoke bearings manifest as random jerking motions, even when the rig is stationary.
- Reducing camera weight is advisable; if the system appears too heavy, a larger stabilizer system is preferable; reference prices: used G-50 approximately 4,000 USD, X-series upgrade from the manufacturer approximately 3,000 USD.
Depends on
- Outcome depends on the specific camera build weight and lens combination.
- Remedy depends on budget and access to larger systems.
