Powering KS4 gyro with 14.8V lithium batteries and inverter compatibility

17 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • The KI-12-D inverter is designed for 12V and does not tolerate higher voltages well.
  • Fully charged lithium batteries can deliver overvoltage that damages standard 12V inverters.
  • Kenyon offers a dedicated 14.4V inverter as the proper solution for higher voltage batteries.
  • A voltage regulator module can be retrofitted to step down 14.8V input to compatible levels for standard inverters.
  • Using a 7812S voltage regulator as a step-down solution allows operation of dual gyros without excessive heat generation.

Depends on

  • The discussion dates to 2009 and may not reflect current product availability.
  • The regulator-based workaround was a temporary field solution by one operator, not officially tested or endorsed.
  • No detailed specifications given for the regulator installation or heat management under sustained use.
