Balancing an ARRI ALEXA 35 with a Cooke Varotal 18–100 mm T3 zoom on Steadicam®, including low-mode operation and weight reduction.

What the thread found

  • One operator achieved balance using heavier batteries positioned low and the post fully extended, replacing the SAM-7 plate with a CBP-5 and 19 mm rods to accommodate the lens length.
  • Multiple operators recommend a third-party longplate mounted under an Apex 35 or ARRI plate, with the camera attached via its dovetail directly to the longplate and the lens support integrated into the same plate.
  • Weight savings are possible by powering the ALEXA 35 via a 24 V cable from the sled rather than an onboard battery; operators should verify with dealers whether the Mini/Mini LF cable (marked 12 V) is compatible with the A35.
  • Several operators advise against heavy zooms for Steadicam® work and suggest proposing lighter alternatives; however, the weight shift of this particular lens during zooming is reported to be minimal.
  • An experienced operator cautioned that every accessory—sync box, onboard battery, large cage, Trinity frame for non-Trinity shots, heavy zooms—accumulates physical strain over a career, and lighter options should always be prioritized.

Depends on

  • Whether refusing the cinematographer's request was necessary, given successful balance and a short shooting day.
