Mounting and operating the Aaton XTRprod camera on a Steadicam rig

19 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • The camera handle can be mounted directly to a Steadicam plate using a fore 3/8-16 inch tapped hole and a rear fastening through the handle groove with a 1/4-20 inch bolt, washer, and nut—no specialized low-mode bracket is required.
  • The Aaton XTRprod accepts power via 4-pin XLR connector, allowing sled power or external battery options rather than relying on onboard batteries.
  • The camera has built-in screwmount mini rods that tend to rotate under motor torque, so motor mounting brackets should clamp down on both rods to prevent unwinding and displacement.
  • Adding a sliding dovetail baseplate and external battery or counterweight improves flight characteristics for longer handheld shots despite increased system weight.
  • The camera's video tap output stops functioning when battery voltage exceeds approximately 16 volts, and excessive voltage can blow internal fuses.
  • Onboard batteries should stay within the camera's rated 10-14 volt range; freshly charged external batteries can measure above 16 volts and cause video tap malfunction until voltage drops.
  • When powering external modules like a Modulus from the camera, the module power switch must remain in the on position to avoid blowing the camera's internal fuse during power connection.
  • The Aaton XTRprod has a low center of gravity and extended length that allows smooth flight characteristics when properly balanced, though it can be more sensitive to motor control than larger 35mm cameras.
  • Each Aaton XTRprod unit may have different configurations and electronic characteristics, requiring careful setup and testing before shoots.

Depends on

  • Advice based on experience with 2000s-era models; newer camera configurations may differ.
  • Power supply voltage tolerance varies by individual camera unit.
  • Battery charging and voltage behavior may change with different charger types and battery age.
  • The experience of smooth flight with added weight is subjective to operator technique and rig configuration.
