Gyroscope mounting strategies for camera sleds
What the thread found
- Mounting a single 6x6 gyro on the bottom of the sled works but creates weight concentration that can make the setup bottom-heavy and difficult to balance, unless the camera is very heavy.
- Spreading weight across two separate gyros requires finding a matched pair, as mismatched units may work against each other and cause instability.
- Center-mounting a gyro between the post and rack using an optical support mount or intersection plate provides better weight distribution than bottom mounting.
- Mounting a gyro on top of the camera works well when using lighter cameras like an F55, paired with batteries on the sled bottom for balance.
- An X-configuration using three gyros, with two mounted to the center post at opposing angles and a third on top of the camera tilted 45 degrees, provides complementary stabilization with minimal effort needed to operate.
- Clamping gyros to the center post halfway between gimbal and sled bottom using lightweight hardware offers rigidity without excess weight.
- Mounting hardware must be rigid and flex-free to effectively transmit gyro stabilization to the camera.
Depends on
- One contributor describes only a test scenario and did not complete the full setup they mentioned.
- The three-gyro X-configuration example lacks photographic documentation.
- No specific guidance given for different camera weight classes beyond general principles.
- The effectiveness of the matched-pair two-gyro approach is described as theoretical rather than proven in practice.
