Practical experience with the Betz Wave stabilization system on film sets

DisputedParticipants disagreed and reached no conclusion. Read the findings as positions, not as an answer.

What the thread found

  • The system effectively maintains horizon level during dynamic camera movement such as running around actors, eliminating horizon drift issues common with other stabilization methods.
  • The device is constructed solidly and does not produce noticeable high-frequency vibration during operation.
  • The system raises the camera approximately 2.75 inches above its normal position.
  • The system operates silently, which is a significant advantage over gyroscopic stabilization.
  • The system provides approximately 5 to 10 degrees of horizon correction capability.
  • The system is not a direct substitute for gyroscopic stabilizers, as they produce different stabilization effects.
  • In low mode configuration, the system can interfere with the operator's knee and requires use of an F-bracket to mitigate this issue.
  • The system's width does not substantially interfere with vest or other steadicam equipment in normal operation.
  • The price point of 6000 EUR was considered reasonable value for the capabilities offered.

Depends on

  • Limited real-world testing reported—the primary user had only used it on one commercial production at the time of writing.
  • No testing data provided for high-speed sprinting scenarios, only general running around actors.
  • The system's performance characteristics have not been extensively compared across different camera models or rigs beyond the Amira with UAP-2 setup mentioned.
  • Disagreement exists regarding whether the system's width is problematic—one participant found it bothersome while others reported no issues.
  • No testing reported on whether the system's correction range is truly sufficient for all shooting scenarios.
