Operating a Steadicam Flyer with camera payloads near or at maximum weight limits

20 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • The Steadicam Flyer is designed to operate with camera packages between 5 and 15 pounds mounted to the Flyer Plate, excluding sled weight and batteries.
  • Exceeding the 15-pound guideline can cause premature wear to gimbal bearing races, arm bearings, arm dogbones, and the vest spar.
  • Custom lightweight mounting plates machined to replace factory camera plates can save several pounds and allow heavier cameras to meet weight requirements.
  • Removing camera accessories like viewfinders and V-mount adapters reduces payload weight and allows for additional battery capacity on the sled.
  • The Flyer can operate slightly over maximum specifications but will exhibit lower flight characteristics and slower drop rates.
  • Extended use of a Flyer beyond designed weight tolerances can stress the battery arm mount bolts and cause balance drift during active operation.
  • Operators working at or near maximum payload capacity should consider upgrading to a larger rig for sustained heavy-duty work.

Depends on

  • Weight calculations refer only to components mounted on the Flyer Plate, not the sled itself.
  • No specific data on long-term durability when operating consistently at maximum weight.
  • Custom plate approach yielded minimal weight savings in one documented case.
  • Specifications provided for Sony cameras in NTSC configuration only.
