TRINITY 2 software regression from SUP 1.5 to SUP 3.0/4.0: motor behavior, control modes, and stability issues with workarounds and downgrade recommendation.

Note (as of October 2026)Curt O. Schaller, the developer of Artemis and Trinity, has no longer been with ARRI since the end of 2025. To our knowledge, ARRI currently has no dedicated team and no official contact persons for its stabilizer systems. In our view, the future of this line is uncertain. If you are buying new, get written confirmation from ARRI beforehand on how long service and spare parts are guaranteed. Have used rigs checked by the manufacturer before you buy.

What the thread found

  • SUP 3.0 and later versions introduced fundamental changes to PID values and motor behavior that degrade core TRINITY 2 functions including Omega mode, follow mode, and 360° look-around movements compared to SUP 1.5.
  • The 360° rotation does not return reliably to 0° in newer versions, creating production failures when precise positioning is required.
  • With ALEXA 35 cameras, SUP 3.0 causes power loss from minor touches or docking because higher motor power is needed to maintain the same response as SUP 1.5, particularly with V-mount batteries; this issue was officially recalled in July.
  • Overcurrent protection is missing in SUP 4.0, with finger crush risk continuing at full force after initial contact rather than stopping.
  • Maximum 360° rotation speed is slower than SUP 1.5 (approximately 0.8 seconds), with acceleration and braking performance degraded.
  • Operators must adjust presets, PID values, and power settings per shot to compensate for software bugs, including tilt steps on long lenses and roll clicking that lags behind TRINITY movement.
  • The pan module exhibits unstable startup behavior that can damage main cables and requires deep system knowledge and workarounds to operate reliably.
  • Several operators report reverting to SUP 1.5 after production incidents, including removal from jobs due to SUP 3.0 instability.

Depends on

  • Findings depend on SUP 1.5 as baseline and TRINITY 2 frame; behavior may differ on TRINITY 1.
  • Power loss issue with ALEXA 35 occurs with V-mount or Gold Mount batteries; B-mount systems are unaffected.
  • Pan module issues specific to installations using that accessory.
  • Stability depends on careful PID tuning and workarounds rather than plug-and-play operation.
