Mounting the ARRI ALEXA 35 on Steadicam®: plate options and balance considerations.
What the thread found
- Ready-made plates include the Apex A35 plate and the cam-jam solution, which position the camera lower but restrict access to lower rods; Panavision and Keslow offer solutions with lower rods, and the Keslow variant accepts older mini dovetail plates, allowing setup changes without rebuilding.
- ARRI SAM-6 with screw-mounted Steadicam® or Apex plate saves approximately 1/8 to 3/8 inch in height and weighs slightly less than SAM-6 alone; SAM-7 was not yet available at the time; SAM-8 was also mentioned.
- The longer SAM-6 provides greater balance travel for lenses of varying weight.
- One operator fabricated a custom plate fitting directly into the Top Stage and the BUD-1 mount of the A35, eliminating the need for screw adapters, offering extended balance travel and 15 mm rods at both ends for a matte box.
- Top rods instead of lower rods allow the flattest mounting geometry, but this approach does not suit every configuration.
- The ALEXA 35 is light enough to run with an onboard battery and can be mounted using its flat shoulder rest plate.
Depends on
- Rig configuration and whether lower rod access is required.
- Lens weight variation affecting choice of SAM plate length.
